COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Individuals who suffered damages from the recent tornadoes and storms between March 11 and 13 may be eligible for disaster assistance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Missouri even if they are insured.

"If you are uninsured or under-insured for disaster-related expenses, damages or losses, FEMA may be able to help," said Federal Coordinating Officer Thomas J. Costello. "If your losses are not fully covered, take the first step and call FEMA's toll free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to register for assistance."

TTY service is available at 1-800-462-7585 for individuals who are speech and hearing impaired. Phone lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST, seven days a week until further notice.

"It is important that impacted Missourians receive all the disaster assistance available to them," stated Ron Reynolds, State of Missouri Emergency Management Agency director (SEMA).

The disaster programs available to homeowners, renters and business owners include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs, and other serious disaster-related needs. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) makes low-interest federal disaster loans available to homeowners, renters, all size business and private non-private organizations whose property was damaged or destroyed in the declared counties.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
