ST LOUIS, Mo. -- A Disaster Recovery Center will open at 8 a.m.Tuesday at the National Guard Armory in Fredericktown, according to state and federal disaster recovery officials.

The National Guard Armory is located at 104 Armory. The hours of operation are: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,Monday through Saturday. The center will be closed on Sunday.

The center is being established to provide information to residents and business owners in Madison County who sustained damage from the severe storms and flooding that affected the area in early April, according to Curt Musgrave of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Persons are encouraged to call and register for assistance before coming to the center. People who may need help in making the call or may need more information, can come to the center for assistance.

To register for state and federal disaster assistance, individuals and business owners are encouraged to call FEMA toll-free, 1-800-462-9029. For those who are hearing- or speech-impaired, the number is 1-800-462-7585. Operators are standing by from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The center provides a face-to-face opportunity for disaster victims to meet with disaster recovery specialists. Representatives from FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and other state and federal agencies will be on hand to answer questions about housing assistance, low-interest loans for individuals and businesses, and other disaster aid.

"The severe storms and flooding that struck the area took a terrible toll on the people of Madison and surrounding counties," said Jerry Uhlmann, director of the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). "The first step in the recovery process is making a simple phone call."
