Local Communities to be Reimbursed for Debris Removal

WICHITA, Kan. -- In his recent visit to tornado stricken areas in South Central Kansas, Vice President Al Gore announced that local communties will be reimbursed 100% of the costs for debris removal. This means that communities conducting tornado debris removal operations will be reimbursed in full for these costs through June 3, 1999.
Home owners and businesses needing tornado debris removed should contact their local officials to determine the best way to accomplish this. Public debris removal activities may not be conducted on private property without the owner's permission, so you may be required to move the debris to the nearest roadway. Follow your community's instructions.
"The tornadoes have brought enough trouble to those in its path," said Curt Musgrave, the federal coordinating officer. "We want to make the road to recovery as short as possible. Take advantage of your community's debris removal service."
Homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage in Sedgwick County as a result of the severe storms and tornadoes starting on May 3 should register with FEMA for disaster assistance. It takes about a 15 minute phone call to the FEMA toll-free teleregistration number: 1-800-462-9029. TTY service is available at 1-800-462-7585 for anyone who is hearing or speech impaired. The registration numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. CDT, seven days a week until further notice.
