WICHITA, Kan. -- On May 14, 1999, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved a request by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM), on behalf of Governor Bill Graves, for expanded federal assistance for Sumner County to repair public infrastructure damaged by severe storms and tornadoes.

The expanded designation makes storm-damaged communities and certain private not-for-profit organizations in Sumner County eligible for federal and state funds to cover the costs of emergency services, debris removal, and the repair and replacement of public facilities such as roads, bridges, buildings and utilities.

"We are pleased to be able to expand our assistance to the affected communities in Sumner County," said Curt Musgrave, FEMA federal coordinating officer.

Sumner County had already received approval for individual assistance programs to help pay for temporary housing, minor home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Long-term, low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also are available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

"We are grateful for the strong support that FEMA is providing during this difficult time," said Terri Ploger, Kansas state coordinating officer.

Residents and business owners in Reno, Sedgwick and Sumner counties who have tornado damage should register for disaster assistance by calling the FEMA toll-free registration number 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585).
