WICHITA, Kan. -- Federal, state, local and voluntary agencies are working in partnership to help Kansans following the severe storms and tornadoes of May 3, one month ago. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) update disaster-relief information and numbers daily from their Disaster Field Office in Wichita.
The information below summarizes ongoing response and recovery efforts for Reno, Sedgwick and Sumner counties:
Since the disaster declaration on May 4, more than 2,150 tornado victims have registered for individual assistance through FEMA's toll-free registration line (1-800-462-9029).
There have been 904 applications for disaster housing assistance, 477 of which have been approved thus far, for a total of $546,391.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $7,647,600 worth of low-interest home and business loans.
The Individual and Family Grant (IFG) Program, administered by the State of Kansas, has approved 259 grants amounting to $1,140,326. More than 636 applications have been transmitted to the IFG program for processing.
Fifteen applications requesting Public Assistance have been accepted. This program reimburses state and local governments for certain eligible disaster-related expenses, which can include debris removal, emergency protective measures, road and bridge repairs, and repairs to public buildings. A total of $1,358,487.51 has been obligated for these and other projects.
