Kansas Disaster Assistance for May Storms Reaches Beyond $44 Million

WICHITA, Kan. -- More than $44 million in assistance has been approved to date by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as they continue to assist the state of Kansas and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) in the recovery from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding of May 4-June 1.

In Kansas, 2,161 individuals were approved for aid in the 21 counties designated to receive Individual Assistance grants. August 6th is the last day individuals can apply for FEMA assistance.

More than $6 million ($6,191,943) in Housing Assistance has been approved to cover rental assistance, temporary lodging, and housing repairs for 1989 applicants. There are 128 families are living in temporary housing supplied by FEMA.

More than $1.3 million ($1,356,814) in Other Needs Assistance (ONA) has been approved for 648applicants to cover their personal property loss, medical costs and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved nearly $34 million in low-interest disaster loans to Kansas residents and businesses. The SBA provides low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, non-profit organizations and businesses of all sizes.

To date, 4,768 people affected by the disaster have met with recovery experts at Disaster Recovery Centers set up throughout the region to provide help.

Public Assistance grants totaling more than $2.8 million have been obligated to reimburse local governments for eligible emergency protective services, debris removal and the repair and rebuilding of infrastructure. To date, 366 Requests for Public Assistance have been received from applicant communities.
Residents who suffered damage between May 4-June 1 and live in any of the following counties should call and register for assistance by August 6th. These counties include: Barton, Clay, Cloud, Comanche, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellsworth, Kiowa, Leavenworth, Lyon, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Phillips, Pratt, Reno, Rice, Riley, Saline, Shawnee and Stafford.
SBA representatives are at all DRC locations to explain how SBA low-interest disaster loans can help homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations pay for their disaster losses, according to SBA officials. They also will meet with applicants one-on-one and assist them in filling out their loan applications. Anyone not able to visit a center should call 1-800-659-2955 for SBA assistance or visit the website at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.
Eligible Kansas residents can call the toll-free registration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Operators are available daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT or register anytime online at www.fema.gov. August 6th is the last day individuals can apply for assistance from FEMA.
FEMA Public Assistance (PA) grants are available in 32 counties to reimburse state and local governments and some private non-profit organizations for eligible costs including emergency services, debris removal and repair or replacement of some public facilities.
Governmental entities, municipal authorities, and certain private nonprofit organizations in the following counties are eligible to apply for PA grants: Barton, Brown, Clay, Chase, Cherokee, Comanche, Dickinson, Doniphan, Douglas, Edwards, Ellsworth, Harper, Jackson, Kingman, Kiowa, Leavenworth, Lincoln, Lyon, Nemaha, Osborne, Osage, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Pratt, Reno, Rice, Riley, Saline, Shawnee, Stafford, Wabaunsee, and Washington.
