Parsons, KS -- State and federal officials announced today that the joint federal and state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opened in Parsons to assist residents of Crawford, Labette and Neosho counties affected by the severe storms and tornadoes of April 19th and 20th, will be closed for the Memorial Day weekend Saturday through Monday, May 27-29.

The DRC is designed to provide more detailed program information to people who have already applied for assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) tele-registration line at 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 800-462-7585). Disaster assistance specialists are available to take calls between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM CDT Monday through Saturday.

"FEMA will still be as close as your telephone," said Federal Coordinating Officer Louis Botta. "Individuals may call the FEMA Helpline to find out about assistance programs or the status of their applications," he added.

Anyone with questions about FEMA programs or the status of their applications may call the FEMA Helpline at 800-525-0321 (TTY 800-462-7585). Helpline specialists are available from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM CDT, every day but Sunday.

Since the May 3rd federal disaster declaration nearly 700 residents in the three affected counties have registered for disaster assistance. The DRC, which opened May 9th in the basement of the Parsons Municipal Building, has provided assistance and information to more than 370 residents who were affected by the recent tornadoes.
