St. Clair, MO -- State and federal officials will open a joint federal/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) on Wednesday, May 31 at the National Guard Armory, 2740 Highway P in Festus. The armory is located five miles west of Festus on Highway P (off Highway A). Highway A connects Hillsboro and Festus. From Interstate 55 take exit 175, go west on Highway P.

The DRC will provide information on assistance programs available as a result of the President's May 12 disaster declaration. The declaration was in response to damage and losses resulting from severe thunderstorms and flash flooding during the weekend of May 6-7.

The DRC will be open Wednesday, May 31 through Friday, June 2, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The purpose of the DRC is to provide assistance and information to Missourians who have experienced damages and losses from the storms and flooding. Representatives of state, federal and voluntary agencies will be present. The disaster programs available include grants to pay for temporary housing needs, minimal home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Residents and business owners also may be eligible for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to help cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

All homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damages to their homes or personal property from the severe thunderstorms and flash flooding during the weekend of May 6-7, are encouraged to take the first step in applying for disaster assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency's toll-free registration number at 1-800-462-9029. Those with hearing and speech impairments can register by calling 1-800-462-7585. The telephone numbers are operational from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT, seven days a week until further notice.
