DES MOINES, Iowa -- The deadline to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) in Iowa's 63 eligible counties is quickly approaching, according to federal and state officials.

The DUA application deadline for disaster victims living in 62 of the eligible counties is Aug. 12, 2008. Residents of Montgomery County, the last to be designated eligible for DUA, must file their claims by Aug.20, 2008.

The benefits provided under the DUA program cover self-employed workers not usually entitled to unemployment insurance, including Iowa farmers and farm workers.  To be eligible for benefits, individuals must be unemployed or unable to do business as a direct result of the recent severe storms, tornadoes and floods, and live in one of the eligible counties.

The DUA program is administered by Iowa Workforce Development, the state's employment security agency, and funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Anyone who thinks he or she may be eligible is encouraged to file a claim at any Iowa Workforce Development Center or online at www.iowaworkforce.org by following the link to “file an unemployment claim.”

The 63 counties eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance are Adams, Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clayton, Clinton, Crawford, Dallas, Davis, Decatur, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Fremont, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Harrison, Iowa, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Mills, Mitchell, Monona, Montgomery, Muscatine, Page, Polk, Pottawattamie, Scott, Story, Tama, Union, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren, Washington, Webster, Winneshiek, Worth and Wright.
