Nebraska gets more than $2.6 Million in Disaster Aid for Individuals and Business Owners

LINCOLN, Neb. -- More than $2.6 million in disaster aid is approved for Nebraska individuals and business owners who sustained damage during the storms, tornadoes and flooding that hammered the state from May 22 to June 24, 2008. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said to date, more than 2,000 people registered for disaster aid.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has allocated well over to $1.4 million of the approved amount in the form of low-interest home and business loans.
"The combination of grant and loan funds is much-needed help for home owners, business owners and renters," said State Coordinating Officer Cindy Newsham. "Our communities are rebuilding and repairing at a good pace in the wake of these disasters."
Here is a breakdown of disaster recovery activity as of Sunday, July 20:

$2.689,000 in total funds approved;

$1,035,000 in housing assistance to homeowners and renters;

$165,299 approved for other needs;

$1,488,300 in SBA approved loans to repair or replace damaged homes and businesses;

1350 inspections are completed of 1,425 properties reported.

"We continue to encourage Nebraskans who suffered the effects of the storms, tornadoes and flooding to call FEMA's teleregistration line and find out if they are eligible for disaster assistance." said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Willie Nunn. "Less than four weeks are left to apply."
The number to call is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing- impaired. Anyone who had storm or tornado damage during the May 22-June 24 period or job losses and who lives, works, or owns a business in the declared counties of Buffalo, Butler, Colfax, Custer, Dawson, Douglas, Gage, Hamilton, Jefferson, Kearney, Lancaster, Platte, Richardson, Sarpy and Saunders should call or register online at www.fema.gov/assistance.
Disaster recovery specialists are available at state/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers at several locations. They have information on mitigation, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and SBA loans. Specialists will check on the status of applications already filed and can help visitors complete the SBA loan application.
