LINCOLN, Neb. -- Teams of community relations specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be visiting Nebraska residents affected by recent severe storms, flooding and tornadoes.

The teams will be in several communities to give people information about FEMA, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Small Business Administration programs available to help with temporary housing, repairs, low-interest loans and eligible expenses not covered by insurance.

The Nebraska counties declared eligible for assistance where team members may be spotted are Buffalo, Butler, Colfax, Dawson, Douglas, Gage, Hamilton, Jefferson, Kearney, Platte, Richardson, Sarpy and Saunders.

"The FEMA teams are in the field to encourage anyone affected to apply for help,'' said Federal Coordinating Officer Willie G. Nunn. "Registration is the first step in the recovery process, and it is an important one."

Both resident and business owners should call the following number as soon as possible to register. Call
(800) 621-FEMA (3362); for anyone with a speech or hearing need the number to call is TTY at
(800) 462-7585. Online applications can be made by going to www.fema.gov/assistance.

The teleregistration line is available 24 hours a day. It normally takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete the application. A 9-digit registration number will be assigned. This number should be written down and kept safe because it will be needed to track the applicant’s claim.

“Folks think if they talk to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army that they're registered with FEMA,” said State Coordinating Officer Cindy Newsham, “but that's not the case. Nebraskans must call the FEMA teleregistration line or use the internet to begin the registration process.”

The community relations team members will be wearing an official photo identification badge.
