Disaster Aid Nears $1.75 Million

Poplar Bluff, MO -- More than 750 people have applied for disaster assistance and almost $1.75 million has been issued in recovery grants and loans throughout 48 counties since President Bush declared a major disaster on May 6 in southeast Missouri for the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding beginning April 24. Another 18 counties have been declared for Public Assistance only, resulting in a total of 66 counties receiving some form of federal and state assistance.

The 48 counties declared for Individual Assistance are: Barry, Barton, Bollinger, Butler, Camden, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Cedar, Christian, Crawford, Dade, Dallas, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Greene, Hickory, Howell, Iron, Jasper, Jefferson, Laclede, Lawrence, Madison, McDonald, Mississippi, New Madrid, Newton, Oregon, Ozark, Pemiscot, Perry, Polk, Reynolds, Ripley, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Stone, Taney, Texas, Vernon, Washington, Wayne, Webster, and Wright.

Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials report the following disaster recovery totals:

760 applications for assistance received
244 disaster housing grants totaling $415,967
527 housing inspections issued
426 housing inspections completed
SBA loan applications approved total $924,400
Individual and Family Grants total $405,439
338 people have visited Disaster Recovery Centers

To date, $1,745,806 is the total amount designated for disaster recovery.

Individuals, families and business owners who suffered losses in the designated counties because of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding beginning April 24 and continuing should apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speaking difficulties. These teleregistration numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice.
