More than $8.4 Million in Disaster Aid Approved in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Grants totaling more than $8.4 million dollars have been obligated to the State of Iowa by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under its Public Assistance Grant Program. This funding will reimburse state and local government agencies and certain eligible non-profit organizations with costs incurred for debris removal, emergency protective measures and the repair of public infrastructure damaged in the December storm.
Iowa received a presidential disaster declaration because of a winter storm that occurred on December 10 - 11, 2007. Thirty counties were declared disasters for this event. Within those designated counties, 282 applicants have submitted Requests for Assistance.
Funding for emergency protective measures - actions taken by applicants to save lives, protect public health and safety and prevent damage to improved public and private property now exceeds $2.1 million.
While debris removal operations are on going due to continuing snowfall, to date $960,130 has been obligated to fund debris operations. Local authorities have six months to complete debris cleanup, starting with the January 4, 2008 date of the federal disaster declaration.
In the area of permanent work, the majority of grant money is being provided to public utility companies to repair and restore hundreds of miles of electrical distribution lines and to repair and replace poles, cross arms, transformers, meters and associated hardware. To date more than $4 million has been obligated for utilities. Funds to repair Roads total more than $1.2 million. Public Assistance grant money totaling $35,731 has been obligated to repair public buildings and $5,235 in grant funds has been provided to repair parks, recreational and other publicly owned facilities.
FEMA pays 75 percent of eligible costs; the state of Iowa and the applicant share the remaining amount. The Iowa Homeland Security Emergency Management Division (HSEMD) manages the program and reimburses applicants for their eligible costs.
