Two Weeks Left to Apply for Disaster Assistance

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Residents and business owners in six Missouri counties who suffered damages from early April severe storms and flooding have just two weeks left to apply for state and federal disaster assistance.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said that June 19 is the deadline to apply for help with damages resulting from storms that occurred from April 3 through 14.
Eligible residents and business owners are those in the following Missouri counties: Andrew, Cole, Iron, Macon, Madison and Osage.
"If there is anyone out there who has damages from those April storms but who hasn't applied yet, they really need to call our toll-free registration line as soon as possible," said Carol Coleman, FEMA federal coordinating officer. "We don't want anyone who needs help to miss this critical deadline."
The toll-free registration number is 1-800-462-9029 and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. For persons who are hearing- or speech-impaired, the number to call is 1-800-462-7585. The teleregistration number will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 19 to accept any last-minute calls.
SEMA Director Jerry Uhlmann stressed that only storm damages that occurred from April 3 through 14 in the six named counties are eligible under Presidential Clinton's April 20 disaster declaration.
So far, 457 persons in the six counties have applied for state and federal disaster assistance, Uhlmann said.
Those who have already applied but have questions about the status of their application can call a toll-free Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 to speak directly to a disaster-recovery specialist. Persons who are hearing- or speech-impaired, can call the Helpline at 1-800-462-7585.
