WICHITA, Kan. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Kansas Hazard Mitigation Team are presenting a free workshop, Rebuilding a Safer, Stronger Community, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 1999, at the Clarion Hotel-Airport, 5805 West Kellogg, Wichita, Kan.
"We hope that all those interested in learning more about lessening the damage from severe storms and tornadoes will attend this free workshop-renters, homeowners, business owners, builders and lenders," said Federal Coordinating Officer Curt Musgrave.
The workshop will include presentations by experts on:
- Windstorm mitigation techniques for light-frame construction.
- Building a Safe Room inside your home.
- NOAA Weather Radio, quickest source for warnings of natural hazards.
- National Flood Insurance Program, regulations applying to construction in the floodplain.
"This free program will help everyone who wants to build a safer, stronger community, including those who received damage from the May 3 tornado," said State Coordinating Officer Terri Ploger.
Featured speakers are Craig Grant, manager of Urbana, Ill., Building Safety Division; Professor David Wickersheimer, structural engineer, University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign; Professor Ernst Kiesling, Wind Engineering Center, Texas Tech University; and Dick Elder, Meteorologist in Charge, Wichita National Weather Service.
