CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Jerry Ostendorf, state coordinating officer for the Iowa Emergency Management Division (IEMD) announced that five briefings for officials from 10 counties declared disaster areas have been scheduled. These meetings are to help officials of local governmental agencies and eligible non-profit organizations apply for federal disaster assistance to help with emergency and permanent repair work in the wake of recent severe storms, flooding, and tornadoes.
The briefings will explain in detail the procedures for local officials to follow in applying for aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance Program. Briefings are scheduled for:

Representatives of IEMD's Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Programs, FEMA, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service will be at these meetings to provide information.
At the request of the state and after reviewing additional damage assessment data, Federal Coordinating Officer Curt Musgrave authorized the amendment of the May 21 disaster declaration to include the Public Assistance Program for communities in following counties: Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Harrison, Jones, and Linn.
With the amended disaster declaration, affected local governments in these counties are eligible to apply for federal assistance to fund 75% of the approved costs for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairing, restoring, or replacing damaged public facilities. Disaster assistance may also be provided for damage to facilities owned by certain private non-profit organizations that operate and maintain education, utility, emergency, medical, custodial care and other essential governmental service facilities.
