INDEPENDENCE, Iowa -- Federal, state, and local officials have joined hands to develop plans intended to reduce future flood damage risk in Independence.
"The officials of the City of Independence are doing everything possible to take care of our citizens at this time of overwhelming disastrous flooding in our area," Mayor Donna Hansen said. "We are developing local flood plain management policies which will protect our city."
It will take approximately one month to finalize and approve city regulations implementing these policies. During that time, the city has placed a moratorium on new construction in the flood plain. This will ensure that new construction complies with the new policies.
Structures damaged in the recent floods will not be affected unless they have been "substantially damaged." City officials determine whether or not a property has sustained substantial damage, and place a blue tag on the structure.
The blue tag states "SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE" and identifies the jurisdiction and inspector who made the determination. It also provides a local telephone number which can be called for answers to questions.
Anyone whose home, business, or other property was damaged by the recent floods should continue with cleanup and repairs. Remember to get the required permits from City Hall. The city has waived permit fees for flood repairs.
