CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- For Iowans who wish to have face-to-face meetings with Recovery Specialists to ask about available assistance on flood damages, the time for visiting a Disaster Recovery Center is getting shorter.
Since opening June 1, Disaster Recovery Centers in northeast Iowa have provided information to almost 1,000 families affected by last month's flooding and will soon implement changes to streamline their activities.
As each center fulfills its mission, it will either convert to U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) workshops or individuals will be asked to use the telephone Helpline to get further information on disaster assistance or to check the status of their applications. These changes will still allow individuals continuing access to vital information.
The centers in Dunkerton and Independence will continue to offer information to residents through Monday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. They will convert to SBA workshops beginning June 15. The SBA workshop hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday until further notice.

Through 6:30 p.m., June 14, residents of the Fayette area can get answers to questions and check on the status of their applications at the Disaster Recovery Center, located at Clark & North Streets in the basement of the Methodist Church.
The centers at Elkport/Garber, and Dyersville will be open until June 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Help is still as close as a telephone call. To register call toll-free 1-800-462-9029. Applicants can call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 to find out about assistance programs and the status of their applications. Those who are hearing- or speech-impaired can call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 to apply or to check on their applications.
Disaster assistance programs include housing assistance, grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by insurance or other programs, and low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for flood-damaged residential and business property. Disaster unemployment assistance, tax assistance and other special services are also available to eligible persons affected by the disaster.
