CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- State and federal officials are urging individuals and businesses owners in Iowa who have sustained damage from heavy rains and flooding since July 2 to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The toll-free registration number is 1-800-462-9029. For the hearing- or speech-impaired the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585.

To date, 13 Iowa counties have been designated disaster areas. This designation makes federal assistance available to eligible homeowners, renters, and business owners who have sustained damage in the continuing severe weather.

"All residents and business owners who have sustained damage from this violent weather should register with FEMA, no matter where in the region they live," said Federal Coordinating Officer, Curt Musgrave. "You must register to determine eligibility for federal and state assistance programs."

The registration lines are available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice.
