Operation Schedule Changes for Tele-registration & Helpline

OMAHA, Neb. -- New hours and days of operation have been established for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Tele-registration and Helpline services.
Beginning immediately, flood victims and affected businesses in Burt, Douglas and Washington counties now can call the FEMA tele-registration line from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Calling the tele-registration number is the first step in being considered for state and federal disaster assistance. The number is 1-800-462-9029. For those who are hearing or speech impaired, the number is (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.
Those who have already registered but who want to check the status of their applications or get additional recovery information, can call the FEMA Helpline, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Helpline number is 1-800-525-0321. For those who are hearing- or speech-impaired, the number is 1-800-462-7585.
"Changing the hours and days of operation for Tele-registration and the Helpline is common at this point in a disaster," said Carlos Mitchell, FEMA federal coordinating officer. "Our call volume has gone down quite a bit so the need for longer operational hours is no longer there."
Residents, business owners and local governments in the three counties became eligible for state and federal disaster assistance on Aug. 20 when President Clinton declared a major disaster for Nebraska. Since then, more than $2 million in state and federal disaster assistance has been approved for individuals, families, businesses and governments.
