April 2003 Minutes

Asian American/Pacific Islander Employment Program (AAPIEP)

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Dr. Bill Bunnag, at 12:15 p.m. The chair noted that the committee did not meet on the usual 3rd Thursday (4/17) because many members had schedule conflicts.

Dr. Bunnag noted that some members may have difficulty participating because of their other meeting conflicts on the 3rd Thursday. Ms. Lucie Chen suggested that the committee reconsider moving regular meetings to another day of the week. The chair stated that he would take this recommendation under advisement. Ms. Chen also suggested that an E-mail survey be conducted to determine which day is best for future meetings. The matter should be brought up for some general discussion at the next meeting.

Since Ms. Selina Lee and Mr. Prahlad Mathur agreed to join this committee as reflected in the last meeting minutes, the chair asked Mr. Charly Wells to proceed with the formal recommendation of their membership to this committee to Mr. Lawrence Self for a formal appointment by Dr. Zerhouni, as provided in the Operating Procedures of the committee.

Dr. Bunnag expressed his appreciation to Mr. Wells for his expeditious help with securing a conference room in Bldg. 50 for the next mentoring program. Ms. Lucie Chen spearheaded this endeavor with the assistance of Dr. Simon Liu. This is a second meeting on the mentoring program, which Ms. Chen was a pivotal force in formulating and bringing the program to its successful conclusion. This second meeting will be on May 29th in rooms 1227 and 1223, Bldg. 50. Two speakers have agreed to participate. Mr. Wells would look into OEODM providing refreshments at the meeting. Ms. Eva Chen will advertise this event through the NIH ListServ. Because this will occur next month, the committee concurred that the next meeting in May be cancelled. The chair urged all members to attend the mentoring program.

The chair emphasized the need to follow-up on Dr. Kington's comments at the last meeting. He believed that the committee membership should consider this matter at the next meeting.

The chair reiterated his hope that the AAPIEC Internet Home page will be up and running very soon. Mr. Wells and the chair had finished the layout design and it is now in the hands of the contractor. The committee recognized that the visibility of this committee, its missions, and activities are very much dependent on this Web site. Mr. Wells affirmed that the release of the AAPIEC Home page is contingent upon the readiness of other special committees of the OEODM, for simultaneous publications of all special committee Home Pages, even though the AAPIEC has accomplished this task several months ago ahead of all other committees.
