Systems biology is a research approach that seeks to understand the overall behavior of biological systems through the acquisition of detailed quantitative data combined with conceptual and mathematical modeling of the systems' components and their interactions. The complexity of the components' interactions and, in large systems, the quantities of relevant biological entities frequently requires the use of computational methods to analyze the data or simulate the system of interest.

Purpose

  • Create new pathways for biomedical discovery in the NIH extra- and intramural community by advancing approaches and technologies driven by systems biology.
  • Build the multi-disciplinary research teams of the future by fostering high-risk systems analysis in biomedical research.
  • Enhance the education and training of quantitative biologists that are needed to develop systems biology as a robust approach for integrating biological data, analysis, and modeling.

Description

As we enter the post-genomics era, systems biology is emerging as a powerful formalism for the identification of system structure and simulation of complex biological behavior. A systems biology approach attempts to integrate experimental, computational and theoretical biology to understand biological systems. The aim is to develop a system-level analysis that provides a deep understanding of system structure and dynamics. The application of systems biology depends on cross-disciplinary teams of researchers working together to develop high-throughput technologies for data acquisition and storage, and sophisticated computational methods for analysis and simulation. The long term goal is to integrate these technologies and biological knowledge to create a new paradigm for biological research, driven by a robust interaction between experiments, technology, computation, and theory.

The Steering Committee

The Steering Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month at 2PM in Building 10, Room 6N264. All SysBioSIG members are welcome to attend.
