Research Activities
NIAID supports investigator-initiated epidemiological research as well as a number of targeted programs and several large HIV/AIDS epidemiological cohort studies.

Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS):an ongoing prospective study established in 1984 to study the natural and treated histories of HIV infection and AIDS progression in 6,973 homosexual and bisexual men at sites located in Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS): a cohort study established in 1993 to study the natural and treated histories of HIV infection and AIDS progression in 2,404 HIV-infected and uninfected women in an era of combination treatments referred to as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).

Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (PHACS): supported by several NIH Institutes (e.g. NIAID, NICHD, NIMH) to study the clinical course of perinatally acquired HIV infection in adolescents and the consequences of fetal/infant exposure to antiretroviral drugs.

Women’s HIV Interdisciplinary Network (WHIN): a research program focusing on HIV pathogenesis in women, including gender differences in immunology, pharmacology, response to therapy, complications of therapy, and immunological, virological, genetic, and behavioral aspects of transmission.

The International Epidemiologic Database to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA):this international, multi-center initiative was created to collect and harmonize data and establish an international research consortium to address unique and evolving research questions in HIV/AIDS currently unanswerable by single cohorts. The goal is to enhance the quality, cost effectiveness, and speed of HIV/AIDS research.
