The Art and Science of Endometriosis: Standardizing the Measurement of Pain and Diagnostic Criteria
October 20, 2006
Sponsored by the NICHD Division of Intramural Research (DIR) and the NIH
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Purpose: Endometriosis is an enigmatic condition that affects millions of women worldwide. It is defined as the presence of functioning, endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, which often induces a chronic, inflammatory reaction. It is predominantly found in women of reproductive age, from all ethnic and social groups. The associated symptoms - dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, pain on micturition/defaecation, and sub-fertility - impact on a woman’s general physical, mental and social well being. The aim of this meeting is to achieve a consensus regarding the most appropriate entry criteria, outcomes and measurement tools for clinical studies assessing treatments for endometriosis associated pain.
