Federal Databases for Biomedical and Nutrition Related Research

CARDS (Computer Access to Research on Dietary Supplements) is a database of federally funded research projects pertaining to dietary supplements. Currently, CARDS contains projects funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Institutes and Centers (ICs) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) beginning with fiscal year 1999, the first year that NIH ICs began reporting research related to dietary supplements. http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/Research/CARDS_Database.aspx

CDMRP (Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs) originated from a unique partnership among the public, Congress, and the Department of Defense. The CDMRP has expanded to become second only to the National Cancer Institute as a source of funding for breast cancer research. The CDMRP also manages research programs in neurofibromatosis, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, tuberous sclerosis complex, chronic myelogenous leukemia, and prion diseases as well as other specified areas. The CDMRP database provides access to projects funded by the CDMRP, many of which contain a nutrition component. http://cdmrp.army.mil/scripts/search.asp

CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) is a searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions. The database, maintained by the Office of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health, includes projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), and Office of Assistant Secretary of Health (OASH). http://crisp.cit.nih.gov/

CRIS (Current Research Information System) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) documentation and reporting system for ongoing and recently completed research and education projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry. Projects are conducted or sponsored by USDA research agencies, state agricultural experiment stations, the state land-grant university system, other cooperating state institutions, and participants in a number of USDA-administered grant programs, including Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and National Research Initiative (NRI), and the programs administered by the Science and Education Resources Development (SERD) unit of the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES). http://cris.csrees.usda.gov/

HNRIM (Human Nutrition Research and Information Management) system database provides information on human nutrition research and research training activities supported in whole or in part by the Federal Government. Each participating agency assembles and submits its own data, which are then combined into the main HNRIM system database. Participating agencies include the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Agency for International Development, the Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, National Science Foundation, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The database is maintained at the Division of Nutrition Research Coordination, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health, under the auspices of the Interagency Committee on Human Nutrition Research. The database contains several thousand projects for each of fiscal years 1985 - present. http://hnrim.nih.gov/
