NIH Speakers Bureau

If you would like to share some of your scientific expertise with others, the NIH Speakers Bureau is always looking for new speakers. If you would like additional information about the NIH Speakers Bureau, go to http://science.education.nih.gov/spkbureau.nsf.

Please click here for the Speaker Profile Form.

The Office of Science Education has had a continuing dialogue with the NIH Ethics Office concerning policies that directly affect the NIH Speakers Bureau. On June 16, 2006, the NIH clarified its Official Duty Activity (ODA) policy. Detailed information can be found at http://ethics.od.nih.gov/topics/official.htm.

Holli Beckerman, Director of the NIH Ethics Office, clarified the policy for employees participating in the NIH Speakers Bureau with the following statement:
Once an employee has determined that he or she does not have a conflict with a speaker's bureau invitation -- most employees would not have a conflict with the types of organizations that request speaker's bureau presentations, e.g., the employee has no spousal employment with the school or any outside position with the school system, the employee can then seek supervisory approval to engage in that activity. The supervisor can set the parameters for the official duty activity, and in doing so, could give blanket official duty clearance for speaker's bureau talks. For example, once the employee has confirmed that he or she has no conflicts with the organization, his or her supervisor may permit the employee to give speaker's bureau talks to public and private elementary, middle school and high schools, and non-health related civic or community organizations as long as such talks do not occur more frequently than twice a month.

For questions about specific activities, contact your IC's Deputy Ethics Counselor or Ethics Coordinator.

Student Ethics Course

The Ethics and Scientific Research Study Guide is a minicourse that deals with the ethical issues scientists face when working in a lab.

Student Intern Program

This program, located at NCI-Frederick, is designed to expose Frederick or Washington County Public School Systems, St. John’s Catholic Prep (Frederick, MD), Frederick Christian Academy (Frederick, MD), Jefferson High School (Jefferson County, West Virginia), and Home Schooled seniors to research through "hands-on" laboratory training. Students work full-time (40 hours per week) for 9 consecutive weeks during the summer and continue during the school year (3 hours per day) as a student volunteer for high school graduation credit. During the summer, each student in this program receives a stipend of approximately $3,000.

Summer Student Seminar Series

The Summer Student Seminar Series allows summer interns to meet one another and hear about the broad range of research being carried out on the Frederick campus. The NCI-Frederick and USAMRIID Summer Student Seminar Series was initiated in 1997. Approximately 50-80 students attend the seminars.

Undergraduate Internship Program (UIP)

The UIP at the NCI-Frederick will offer undergraduates an opportunity to participate in an unpaid internship in an NCI laboratory or program and receive degree credit from their college or university. Each internship will be unique depending on the requirements of the program in which the undergraduate is participating and will be negotiated on an individual basis. In order for a student to apply, their academic institution must have an agreement in place with the NCI-Frederick. Complete information regarding the UIP, including how to apply, colleges/universities with agreements in place, and potential mentors, will be available early summer 2008.

Volunteer for the Elementary Outreach Program

The Elementary Outreach Program provides the opportunity for elementary school students to receive supplemental science training through hands-on experiences. The program is supported by the NCI at Frederick and its' system of support contractors who have entered into a formal partnership agreement with the Frederick County Public School System. We encourage our volunteers to take the program to schools in their neighborhoods if they live outside of Frederick County. If you would like to volunteer or just want to know more about the program, please sign up using the volunteer form on the EOP site or send an email to eop@ncifcrf.gov.
