More Information on GIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful computer systems that can be used to store, manipulate, analyze, and display spatial (geographic location) relationships between dissimilar data types. The LI GIS provides the opportunity to apply this powerful emerging technology to the study of environmental causes of breast cancer and other types of cancer and diseases.

GIS has been in development for more than 20 years, but only with recent advances in computer hardware, software, and increased availability of geocoded health and environmental data (data tagged to location on the earth's surface) has it come into use in public health research and protection.
