The Breast Cancer Think Tank (BCTT) has monies available in
fiscal year 2002 to fund projects and programs the Breast
Cancer Think Tank community decides are important to its goals.
The BCTT Steering Committee is, once again, soliciting proposals
to support these initiatives. As an encouragement to work cohesively
between departments, collective proposals will be given additional
consideration. Proposals should provide a broad level of support
to the NIH community involved in breast cancer research. Because
of the need for multi-year resources, this mechanism should
not be used for requests to fund post-doctoral fellows. Please
also note that these awards can only be awarded to intramural
investigators. Projects that involve collaborations with the
extramural community are appropriate, but the awards must be
made to a member of the intramural community. Please note that
these awards will be allocated in FY2002. Therefore the DEADLINE
for SUBMISSION is Wednesday, August 1, 2001. Recipients will
be notified when the fiscal year 2002 budget is approved.
The BCTT awards are separate from the IRA funding mechanisms.
Grants of up to $30,000 are encouraged, and priorities for awarding
funding are as follows:
- Building the infrastructure of the BCTT community e.g.,
establishment of a resource database; symposia, workshops,
or didactic programs.
- Funding of service work for projects that will benefit a
significant fraction of the community, e.g., Sequencing costs
involved in the gene discovery phase of MGAP (Mammary Genome
Anatomy Project) production of new animal models or maintaining
a colony of animals.
- Purchase of "core" equipment needed as a shared resource
by the community.
- Funding new innovative individual projects are categorized
as "high-risk" or "high-impact."
- Funding for translational research on clinical specimens,
for example: EGFR phosphorylation in tumor tissue; assay
development or scale-up for novel biomarkers linked to breast
cancer risk or etiologic studies testing novel hypotheses
using existing biologic specimen resources.
Please respond by Wednesday, August 1, 2001, and provide comments
and new ideas regarding specific items or initiatives that you
would like to see funded. Your response need only be very brief
(not to exceed two pages) and should include the following:
- Title
- Designate whether the application is categorized scientific
or infrastructure.
- Indicate whether previous funding from the BCTT has been
received and, if yes, provide a one-page summary, on a separate
page, of the progress of such funding.
- Indicate whether you have requested funding from another
mechanism within the National Cancer Institute and, if yes,
provide an explanation as to whom you have requested such
funding and the amount.
- Description of project/technology/equipment (no more than
two pages.)
- Relevance to mission of Breast Cancer Think Tank.
- If shared resources, please include a statement as to how
investigators will obtain access to its use.
- Budget
- Collaborative investigators with brief biosketches (NO cvs,
please)
- Name, address, phone, fax, and e-mail of primary investigator
responsible for communicating about the grant.
