Prostate Cancer Research and Prevention Act

H.R. 2945

Background

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in the United States, after skin cancer. Among all U.S. men diagnosed with cancer each year, about one-third are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act of 1993 (P.L. 103-43) inserted a new section into the Public Health Service Act requiring the Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to expand, intensify, and coordinate the activities of the Institute with respect to prostate cancer. P.L. 103-43 authorized $72 million for fiscal year (FY) 1994 and such sums as may be necessary for FYs 1995 and 1996. The Public Health Improvement Act (P.L. 106-505) renewed the appropriations section through FY 2004.

Provisions of the Legislation/Impact on NIH

Section 2 of H.R. 2945 would reauthorize NCI's prostate cancer research appropriations section for such sums as may be necessary through FY 2010.

Status and Outlook

H.R. 2945 was introduced by Representative Frank A. LoBiondo (R-NJ) on June 16, 2005, and was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. No further action has occurred on this legislation.
