P.L. 110-293 - The Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS

On July 30, 2008, the President signed H.R. 5501, the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008 as P.L. 110-293. Research-related provisions would require the Director, OAR, to (1) expedite the implementation of the Federal strategic plan regarding the conduct and support of research on, and the development of, a microbicide to prevent HIV transmission, (2) review and revise, as appropriate, the plan to prioritize funding and activities relative to their scientific urgency and potential market readiness, and (3) consult with the Global AIDS Coordinator, the Director, CDC, the Administrator, USAID, the microbicide community, and health advocates. Further, the Director, NIAID, acting through the Institute’s Director of the Division of AIDS, would be required to carry out research on, and development of, safe and effective methods for use by women to prevent HIV transmission, including microbicides.
