Dr. Steven Libutti's research interests are directed towards new strategies for cancer detection and treatment---including tumor angiogenesis, antiangiogenesis gene therapy, regional perfusion therapy of malignant lesions, isolation and characterization of unique tumor cytokines, and novel delivery vehicles for antineoplastic agents.

Dr. Libutti received a B.A. in biology from Harvard University and a medical degree from Columbia University. His postgraduate education included an internship and residency at Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, and a fellowship in surgical oncology in the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Libutti then held several positions in the NCI Surgery Branch before becoming a Senior Investigator in 2000. He also has been Assistant Professor of Surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, since 1996. Dr. Libutti was on active duty in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps from 1996 to 2000.

Among the honors and awards that Dr. Libutti has received were the Blakemore Award for Distinguished Research in Surgery (annually, 1991-1994) and a 2000 NCI Service Award. Dr. Libutti serves on the editorial boards of the journals Biological Therapy and Molecular Imaging, as well as on several journal and grant review boards relating to cancer research. He is a member of several professional societies and currently serves as cochairman of the NCI Tumor Angiogenesis and Invasion Working Group.

Dr. Libutti has published 76 peer-reviewed journal articles, 10 book chapters, and 50 abstracts and has presented numerous talks and lectures. He also holds four U.S. research patents.
