Breast Cancer: Progress and Promise

Dr. Jo Anne Zujewski conducts clinical and translational research in breast cancer prevention and treatment. Within the NCI Center for Cancer Research, where she has been a Senior Medical Oncologist since 1998, she leads the breast cancer prevention initiative. She conducts pilot chemoprevention trials designed to evaluate the toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker modulation of potential breast cancer prevention agents: the ultimate goal is to select agents suitable for large-scale testing. Dr. Zujewski is also interested in developing targeted therapies for use in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.

Dr. Zujewski obtained a B.S. in Medical Technology from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and her medical degree from University of Minnesota. Her postdoctoral training included an internal medicine residency at University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals, Seattle, and a fellowship in Medical Oncology at University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals and at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, also in Seattle.

Since coming to the NCI Medicine Branch in 1993, Dr. Zujewski has served on various advisory bodies, including the NCI Intramural Advisory Board, NIH Clinical Center Ethics Committee, and NCI Institutional Review Board. In 1995, she received the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Young Investigator Award.

Dr. Zujewski also has accepted numerous review responsibilities for both research grants and scientific journal articles and is a member of several professional societies.
