Heart Attack: Rapid Diagnosis Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Despite the progress achieved against heart attacks, they are still a major killer of Americans. Quick, accurate diagnosis is the key to successful heart attack treatment, especially for patients with hard-to-define cases.

Dr. Robert S. Balaban, an expert in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), will explain how MRI detects heart attack and heart disease.

He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Miami, majoring in chemistry and biology. He continued his studies at Duke University, where he earned a doctorate in physiology and pharmacology.

From 1980 to 1981, he was a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow in biochemistry at Oxford University. He then joined NIH as a member of the Laboratory of Kidney and Electrolyte Metabolism of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Since 1988, he has served as NHLBIís Chief of the Laboratory of Cardiac Energetics.

Dr. Balaban is an active member of numerous professional associations, including the American Physiological Society, the Biophysical Society, and the Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. From 1995 to 1996, he was President ohe International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Dr. Balaban has organized professional symposia and serves on numerous scientific advisory boards. He has published widely, having authored or coauthored 190 peer-reviewed papers and more than 600 abstracts.

He was associate editor of the American Journal of Physiology, and is on the editorial boards of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Biomedicine, Magnetic Resonance Quarterly, and Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Dr. Balaban has received prestigious honors for his work including a Gold Medal from the Society of Magnetic Resonance, a Public Health Service Superior Service Award, and most recently, an NIH Director's Award.

Currently, Dr. Balaban's research explores the use of MRI to rapidly identify heart disease--and ultimately save lives.
