The National Commission on Digestive Diseases (NCDD) held its inaugural meeting on June 12, 2006, at the Marriott Crystal City at the Reagan National Airport, Arlington, Virginia. At this public meeting, the members decided to form Working Groups to assist the Commission in developing the long-range plan for digestive diseases research specified in the Commission's charter. Based on the members' discussion of themes and topics as subjects for the Working Groups, a list of 13 Working Groups was formally drawn up by the NCDD Chair and approved by the Commission members.
Role of and Charge to the Working Groups: The Working Groups report directly to the Commission and are chaired by a member of the Commission. Each Working Group consists of approximately 8-10 members. The members are required to prepare a report on the group's topic area. The recommendations from the Working Groups will be submitted to the full Commission for review and approval in meetings open to the public. The Working Group reports then will be incorporated into the final report of the Commission.
Membership: Following an open public nominations process, Commission members selected individuals to serve on the individual Working Groups listed here. Working Group members were required to:
- Have expertise/experience related to the topic area of the Working Group.
- Be knowledgeable about current research related to the topic area of the Working Group.
- Be prepared to devote time from late summer of 2006 through the spring of 2007 to write the required reports on the topic area.
- Be available to meet via conference call one or two times during that period to discuss the topic area and review the reports of their Working Group members. Conference calls will be approximately 90 minutes long.
Due to the scientific nature of the Working Group reports, members are primarily scientists, physicians, and practitioners with expertise in digestive disease research. Some persons with close personal or family experience or experience with patient-oriented organizations were also included on Working Groups. Rosters for the 13 Working Groups are posted here.
Current Activities: The Working Group chairs presented on their progress at the November 6, 2006 Commission meeting. Working Group members then convened for conference calls during which they built consensus on important research goals and opportunities in their specific area of digestive diseases research. Following these calls, the Group chairs presented their input to the Commission at its meeting on June 18-19, 2007. Currently, the Commission members serving as Working Group chairs are using the Group’s input to prepare chapter content for the research plan.
