The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination within the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health (NIH), has established a Network of Minority Research Investigators (NMRI) from underrepresented populations:  African American, Hispanic American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders. The objective of the network is to facilitate communication, participation, and mentorship of biomedical research in the fields of diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, digestive diseases, nutrition, kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases among underrepresented minority investigators.  A strategic outcome of the network is to increase the number of underrepresented minority investigators who choose and sustain a successful career in research.

In support of this initiative, the NMRI would like to announce the NMRI Midwest Regional Workshop scheduled to take place on November 13 - 14, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in Chicago, IL. This workshop provides the opportunity for mentorship, poster presentation, and scholarly exchange among leaders in the fields. The workshop is designed for NMRI members and underrepresented minority investigators (including medical students, post-graduate doctoral students, residents, fellows, junior faculty, and senior faculty new to NMRI) who are engaged in NIDDK-relevant research.
Participation in the workshop and membership in NMRI is by invitation only; travel expenses are reimbursed for invited attendees. If you have not done so already, please contact Ms. Winnie Martinez at (301) 435-2988 or martinezw@mail.nih.gov to determine your eligibility to participate in this workshop.  Participants are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for poster presentation.

There is no fee to attend this workshop.
