H. R. 5852 The Great Ape Protection Act
On April 17, 2008, Representative Edolphus Towns (D-NY) introduced H.R. 5852, the Great Ape Protection Act, to prohibit the conduct of invasive research on great apes, and for other purposes. The bill would require the Secretary of HHS to transfer for permanent retirement all great apes owned or under the control of the federal Government that have been used for invasive research. It would further prohibit any Federal funding for conducting invasive research on a great ape. H.R. 5852 was referred to the House Committees on Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, and Financial Services.
