Chemical Waste

Chemical Waste Management Procedures for specific types of chemical waste
Definition Nonradioactive chemical solids, liquids, or other waste types contaminated with hazardous chemicals.
Examples
  • Surplus chemicals
  • Batteries
  • Spent solvent
  • Used oil of all types
  • Pesticides
  • Used chemical spill clean-up materials
  • Photographic film processing solutions
  • Non-radioactive lead shielding and lead scrap
  • Broken thermometers and other items containing mercury
  • Cytotoxic agents or prescription drugs (non-controlled substances)
  • Empty drums and other containers with a capacity of 5 gallons and greater
  • Non-returnable gas cylinders and lecture bottles (18-inch length maximum)
General Information
Tag and Identify
  • Use Chemical Waste Tag (NSN-753O-OO-LO7-5985)
  • When completing the Chemical Waste Tag, identify all major constituents and hazardous components by chemical name, not by acronym or brand name

Segregate Segregation and chemical compatibility information
  • Mercury or mercury containing materials from any other waste
  • Dioxin or dioxin containing materials from any other waste
  • Peroxide forming chemicals from any other waste
  • Oxidizers from organic compounds, flammable, combustible, and reducing agents (eg. zinc, alkaline metals)
  • Aqueous wastes from organic solvents
  • Inorganic acids from:
         Organic materials
Caustics and active metals such as sodium, magnesium, and potassium
Chemicals which can generate toxic gases upon contact such as sodium cyanide and iron sulfide

Store Safely
  • Store in laboratory while awaiting pickup. Do not put waste containers in hallways or other public locations
  • Ensure that all chemical waste containers are closed securely except at the time waste is added (No funnels left in open containers)
  • Place chemical waste containers in a spill containment pan

Dispose of Safely
  • Do not discard waste chemicals into sink drains, with general waste, or with MPW
  • Do not put heavy metal compounds, oxidizers, phenols, strong acids, or bases in a safety can
  • Chemical waste MUST be picked up within 60 days of the collection start date

Chemical spills
  • First call 911 for clean-up. For questions later, call your Safety and Health Specialist, 301-496-2346
  • For ethidium bromide spills, soak area with 50% MOPS(3_(N_Morpholino)propanesulfonic acid) (NSN-6810-00-L06-4830) in water and call 911 for clean-up

Explosive/reactive chemicals
  • Contact the Division of Environmental Protection, 301-496-7990

Laboratory Moves / cleanouts
  • Start planning as early as possible and call for information (301-496- 7990)
  • Call 301-496-4710 at least 4 weeks in advance of anticipated laboratory move
  • For more information about lab moves
Disposal of narcotics & controlled substances
  • Human use, call Clinical Center Pharmacy, 301-496-1914
  • Nonhuman use, Veterinary Resources Pharmacy, 301-496-2527

Other
  • UPS Batteries must be removed from the UPS casing prior to pickup. Call SEIB, 301-496-4131
  • Tissues in formalin or formaldehyde solution: drain off liquid and dispose through Chemical Waste Disposal Service; dispose of tissue per MPW section
  • Empty chemical containers may be disposed of through the Chemical Waste Disposal Service
