Aims of the Conference:

To promote healthcare-based research aimed at reducing or eliminating disparities in diabetes and obesity-related outcomes. In addition, this 1 ½ day conference will feature presentations about important factors in healthcare-based disparities research as well as discussion of unique design, measurement, and methodology issues.  There will be presentations from leaders in the field and multiple opportunities for discussion. Concurrent with this conference, the NIDDK has issued a Program Announcement (PA) for R01s on identifying and reducing diabetes and obesity-related health disparities within healthcare systems. Visit here for more information: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-07-388.html.

To Register:

Please register for the conference here. On the registration form, it is important that you rank the breakout session topics in order of preference that you want to attend on the second day of the conference, so that we assign you to your desired sessions as each session will fill up quickly. You also will need to indicate if you plan to purchase a box lunch on Day 1 of the conference on your registration form. We recommend that you consider this option as there are a few nearby food outlets and they have limited capacity. If you do plan to purchase the lunch, you can pay online by credit card when you register.  If you have any special food restrictions or choose not to have a lunch ordered for you at the conference, please indicate this information on the form where indicated. Agenda specifics can be found here. NOTE:  Registration is FREE for all participants to attend this Government-sponsored conference.

Topics of Interest:

The Importance of a Healthcare Systems Approach—Epidemiology, Adults, Children, and Adolescents; Research Framework—Conference Model; Healthcare System Factors/Health Services Research; Healthcare Team Factors; Patient-Level Factors—Children and Adults; Community-Level Factors; Community-Based Participatory Research; Multifactorial Research; Research Design and Measurement Issues; Special Issues across the Lifespan; Interventions in Adults and Pediatrics; Cultural Tailoring and Audience Segmentation: Linking to the Community; and Data Linking and Analysis with Multiple Levels of Data.

Grant Writing Workshop:

The afternoon of the second day of the conference will be devoted to a “Grant Writing Workshop” targeted to junior investigators or investigators new to the field who are interested in submitting research proposals related to healthcare-based research to reduce disparities. Investigators will be given opportunities to learn from and interact with senior researchers and NIH staff. Space is limited, so participants will be selected in the order that they apply. In advance of the workshop, individuals who want to participate must submit a 1-page proposal outlining their healthcare-based disparities research aims, hypotheses, and methods, and 1-3 specific research or grant writing questions. These submissions are due Friday, May 30, 2008, and should be sent to Ms. Amy Amerson at aamerson@scgcorp.com. These research summaries will be used to facilitate learning and to provide feedback to enhance the quality of future grant submissions. The faculty will include experts from the NIH on the grants writing process and individuals with successful grant writing and grants review expertise. The workshop will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on July 1, 2008. Pre-registration is required for those interested in attending the Grant Writing Workshop as space is limited.
