  Overview

A 2-day workshop on Anemias of Inflammation and Chronic Disease, sponsored by the Hematology Program of the Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health, will be held at The Historic Inns of Annapolis Conference Center, Annapolis, Maryland, on May 1 and 2, 2006. See the Logistics Page for more information.

Purpose

This workshop will summarize current insights into the clinical presentation and pathogenesis of these anemias and include discussion of unanswered questions and new opportunities for relevant basic and translational research. The program will consist of presentations by a panel of invited experts who will address:
  1. The clinical features, diagnosis, epidemiology, and clinical impact of these anemias.
  2. Pathogenetic mechanisms relating to disordered iron metabolism, disturbances in EPO production and response, the action of inflammatory cytokines, and age-related changes in erythropoiesis.
  3. New directions and opportunities for molecular diagnosis, clinical stratification, and treatment.

Also, there will be an opportunity for poster presentations and discussion by workshop participants. Participation in this workshop may be limited, so registrations prior to April 1, 2006, are encouraged.
