The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) announces a workshop on the role of ribosomal biogenesis in disease in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  With the recent discovery of a ribosomal protein defect in some cases of Diamond-Blackfan Anemia, exploration into how the ribosomes could cause this disease, as well as others, needs to take place.  This workshop will review what is currently known about ribosomal biogenesis and then embark on recent clinical connections of ribosomal malfunctioning and disease.  Experts in the field will present their findings, and discussion from participants is encouraged.  Topics covered are:  ribosomal structure and function; the nucleolus; biogenesis of the ribosome and stoichiometry; and quality control, surveillance, and disease.  A poster session will feature “hot topics” that describe recent discoveries. The meeting is open to everyone and will be of particular interest to clinicians, basic scientists, advocacy groups, and patients.  Please register early due to limited seating.
