  Aims of the Meeting
Liver transplantation is now the standard of care for children with end-stage liver disease. The success of liver transplantation in children is excellent in terms of long-term survival. However, major challenges still exist in managing children after liver transplantation, particularly in view of the reality that immune suppression and post-transplant management must be life-long. Today, a major challenge in pediatric liver transplantation is the quality of life and health issues with long-term survival after liver transplantation. In view of these challenges, the Liver Disease Research Branch of NIDDK has organized a one-day meeting on improving long-term outcomes after liver transplantation in children. Topics will include an overview of survival and complications after pediatric liver transplantation, long-term medical complications including renal, cardiovascular and oncologic conditions, growth and development, school performance, adolescent issues and health-related quality of life, important issues that clinicians confront with liver transplanted children who continue to mature through life. At the conclusion of the meeting, there will be a summary and future recommendations session to highlight the main research challenges raised during the meeting. A summary of the meeting and research recommendations will be submitted for publication by the meeting organizers.

The workshop is sponsored by the Liver Disease Research Branch of the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition of NIDDK and the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD).

There is no fee for registration.
