IG Handbook
Hosting a Fogarty Scholar
(Obtaining Outside speaker support)

How to:

Write a mini-proposal, indicating the name, institutional affiliation, and lecture subject of the speaker. Include a couple sentences in support of the speaker and why he or she is of special interest to your IG. Include the proposed time, date, and location of the event. If there is any chance of co-meeting/co-hosting with another IG, include that (this strengthens nominations). If the lecture will be fleshed out to a minisymposium with local talent, indicate the other speakers or events. Then add a minibudget (itemized breakdown of the money you are asking for). Send this via email to Dr. Gottesman with a copy to Celia Hooper.

Money/honoraria:

We don't have a huge pot of money for this, so your request should be for a truly special event. Because the money is tight, we don't provide honoraria -- just travel, hotel etc. It's great if we can leverage the money; for example, providing hotel expenses to keep someone here for an extra day who is coming to NIH for another meeting. Another example would be a speaker who would talk at a mini-symposium hosted by two IGs working together. Occasionally we've used the money to cover teleconferencing a minisymposium to widen the participation.
