| Abstract: | (CIT): NLM Informatics Lecture Series The current challenge for medical informatics interface designers is to enable users to harness the flood of information into a productive stream of meaningful information that supports creative and effective decision making. Novel strategies in information visualization allow users to explore in systematic yet flexible ways, while recording their interaction history and collaborating with relevant colleagues. We begin with commercial success stories such as Spotfire, SmartMoney's MarketMap, or the HiveGroup and explore their application to medical informatics. Then we look at research tools for patient history search and clinical data analysis. They place human decision making and discovery at the heart of interface design. A final theme is the integration of personal medical devices into the data collection process so as to increase physician and patient resources for decision making. Ben Shneiderman http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ben is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Founding Director (1983-2000) of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil and Member of the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland at College Park. He was elected as a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in 1997 and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2001. He received the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He is a member of the NLM Board of Scientific Counselors. Ben is the author of several books and textbooks. His recent books include Leonardo's Laptop: Human Needs and the New Computing Technologies (MIT Press) which won the IEEE book award in 2004. |
