The Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) serves NIAID’s extramural research community and the Institute by overseeing policy and management for grants and contracts, including research training, small business, and international awards. DEA staff members interact with grantees, contractors, reviewers, committee members, applicants, and program staff.
Through DEA's Scientific Review Program, NIAID conducts initial peer review for applications with Institute-specific requirements: program projects (P), cooperative agreements (U), training (T) and career development (K) grants, contracts (N), and responses to requests for applications and requests for proposals.
DEA performs other specialized functions for the Institute. These include overseeing the National Advisory Allergy and Infectious Diseases Council and other chartered committees, disseminating information to the extramural community through the NIAID Research Funding site and newsletter Funding News, and implementing extramural staff training and internal communications.
