New Application | Refers to an application not previously proposed, or one that has not received prior funding. Also known as a Type 1.

New Investigator | An individual who has not previously served as a principal investigator on any Public Health Service-supported research project other than a small grant (R03), an Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15), an exploratory development grant (R21), or certain research career awards directed principally to physicians, dentists, or veterinarians at the beginning of their research careers (K01, K08, and K12). Current or past recipients of Independent Scientist and other non-mentored career awards (K02 and K04) are not considered "new investigators."

NIH Management Fund | The Management Fund provides for the financing of certain common research and administrative support activities which are required in the operations of NIH.

NIH Roadmap for Medical Research | The NIH Roadmap for Medical Research provides a framework of the priorities NIH as a whole must address in order to optimize its entire research portfolio. It lays out a vision for a more efficient and productive system of medical research. The NIH Roadmap identifies the most compelling opportunities in three main areas: new pathways to discovery, research teams of the future, and re-engineering the clinical research enterprise.

No-Cost Extension | Extension of a grant's project period without additional funds. For grants issued under expanded authorities, a principal investigator does not need approval from NIAID to extend a project period one time for up to twelve months. |
Noncompeting Grant | An ongoing grant whose award is contingent on the completion of a progress report as the condition for the release of money for the following year.

Not recommended for further consideration (NRFC) | A judgment made by a scientific review group for applications when the merit of the proposed research is not significant and substantial enough to warrant a further review. The study section does not recommend funding; the application cannot be funded by an Institute.

Notice of Award | The legally binding document notifying the grantee and others that an award has been made contains or references all terms and conditions of the award documenting the obligation of Federal funds may be in letter format and may be issued electronically. Previously known as Notice of Grant Award.
