BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Department Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness have announced grant funding for several large public projects in Louisiana .

Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals

$12.8 million*

Contract with an outside source to assist the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and Louisiana State Police Crime Lab in the identification of human remains

St. Tammany Parish

$1.6 million*

Reimbursement for costs associated with emergency preparations for Hurricane Katrina including staff, equipment and meals

Military Department State of Louisiana

$25.8 million*

Response activities for the period of August 29 – November 30 for labor, equipment and materials

Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness

$26.1 million*

Funding is for a state grantee programmatic management consultant to assist the state of Louisiana in the delivery of the Public Assistance Program

The grants are part of ongoing federal reimbursements to state and local government agencies and certain non-profit agencies that provide essential government-like services for disaster-related expenses. The grants will continue until all eligible costs have been reimbursed. FEMA Public Assistance grants are distributed to the state of Louisiana which forwards the money to the sub-grantees.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
