BATON ROUGE, La. -- People who are unemployed because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have less than two weeks to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Federal and state officials urge those in need of disaster-related employment assistance to contact the Louisiana Department of Labor before the Nov. 30 deadline.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program extends income compensation to people who otherwise would be ineligible for unemployment compensation, such as farmers and self employed individuals who are out of work as a result of the disasters.

Claims for disaster unemployment assistance should be filed in person at any Louisiana Department of Labor One Stop or job center; online at www.LAWORKS.net; or by calling 1-800-430-8076 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

People who suffered damages as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who have not registered with FEMA should do so by calling toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Individuals and families may also register online at www.fema.gov. People with a speech- or hearing-impairment can call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.
