BATON ROUGE, La. The U.S. Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with state and local governments, and other federal and voluntary groups continue supporting recovery efforts for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As of Oct. 21:
- Nationwide, more than 1.29 million households have received hurricane disaster assistance totaling more than $3.9 billion. To register, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY); or register online at www.fema.gov.
- More than 13,000 families and individuals have received temporary housing assistance in the form of manufactured housing (travel trailers or mobile homes) with an additional 2,810 ready for occupancy.
- There are 6,810 evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in shelters in 8 states. This is down 98 percent from the high of 273,000 evacuees in shelters.
- More than 83,000 Temporary Blue Roofs have been installed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The USACE has a FEMA-assigned mission to provide temporary repairs to roofs damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
- The USACE, and state and local governments, during the past four days (October 15 through 19), collected more than two million cubic yards of debris. The total debris collected to date is more than 26.4 million cubic yards, or almost enough to fill the Superdome six times.
- FEMAs Public Assistance Program provides support to state and local governments and certain private non-profits for clean up and repair after a disaster. To date, more than 880 projects have been approved for a combined total of nearly $1.2billion.
FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
