Recovery Assistance To Renters Tops $33 Million

AUSTIN, Texas -- Renters displaced or otherwise affected by Hurricane Ike have received more than $33.3 million in disaster assistance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today. In addition to homeowners and business owners, renters may also be eligible for disaster assistance. Renters may qualify for grants to rent a new place to live if their primary residence requires repairs to make it habitable. Eligible renters may be awarded one or two months of assistance depending on circumstances.

ONA includes grants to replace personal property and help meet medical, dental, funeral, transportation, and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other federal, state and charitable aid programs.

In addition to rental assistance, renters may also be eligible for grants or U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans for personal property losses. 

Texans can apply or follow up on their FEMA applications by going online to www.fema.gov, or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- and hearing-impaired. Both numbers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
