Dietary Supplements: What Do You Know? What Should You Know? (Webcast) - Paul M. Coates, Ph.D., discusses how NIH researchers are studying the many and varied aspects of dietary supplements. Through examples of dietary supplements such as substances derived from plants, nutrient ingredients like vitamins, or food components like omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish, learn what a dietary supplement is, how it is different from a food or a drug, and who takes them and why. The regulation and evaluation of diet supplements will be presented. Hear what is really known about these supplements and equally important, what is not known about them. Endometriosis: Scrambled Eggs and Killer Cramps (Webcast) - Pamela Stratton, M.D., explains a study investigating whether raloxifene will prevent the return of pain after surgical treatment of endometriosis. What sets this research apart is the study of a designer estrogen, which blocks the body’s estrogen in the uterus and therefore may prevent the regrowth of endometriosis. Endometriosis is a commong gynecologic disease. Tissues resembling the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, usually on the pelvic organs. The pain may be so severe that it impacts on their quality of life. Medical research on endometriosis continues to look into improving drug therapies and surgical treatments, but because of the complexity of the disease, there may be a long way to go before finding a cure. Evidence-Based Education: Preventing Reading Failure in America (Webcast) - G. Reid Lyon, Ph.D., discusses how scientists are researching how children learn to read and why some children have difficulty reading. Learn about the progress to date of a comprehensive study that examines children's reading abilities during the early years, including the efforts to understand how to prevent reading failure. Lectures in the Science of Complementary and Alternative Medecine. - Each year, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine invites two leading figures in science and medicine to participate in the Distinguished Lecture series. The lectures provide a unique perspective on the evolution of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practice and research, as well as current use of CAM by the public. The public may attend the lectures in Bethesda, Maryland or view the videocasts on the web. (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine)

Nanoscale Cantilevers (Animation) - Nanoscale cantilevers – microscopic, flexible beams resembling a row of diving boards – are built using semiconductor lithographic techniques. These can be coated with molecules capable of binding specific substrates—DNA complementary to a specific gene sequence, for example. Such micron-sized devices, comprising many nanometer-sized cantilevers, can detect single molecules of DNA or protein. (National Cancer Institute)
